Willemstad – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
In December 1997, historic Willemstad received a special honour: on the recommendation of the Government of Curaçao, UNESCO added the city to the World Heritage List. This international recognition highlights Willemstad’s unique cultural and historical value, which resonates throughout the Caribbean and beyond.
Willemstad began as a European colonial city, but its identity has been shaped over the centuries by a rich mix of communities. These varied influences have left their mark on its architecture and way of living, while much of the original urban structure remains visible. This unique blend of cultures enables Willemstad to preserve its authentic character in a distinctive way.
The city consists of core areas surrounded by buffer zones, which together form the protected historic townscape. These boundaries are established in the legally recognised Island Development Plan (EOP), emphasising Willemstad’s special status as a World Heritage Site.
