Technical Restoration Plan

Technical Restoration Plan – Your Step-by-Step Guide to Monument Restoration

Would you like to renovate or adapt a protected monument? A valid Monument Permit is always required. Whether you want to restore the façade, consider an extension or plan another project, any major work on a monument requires this permit. In some cases, an additional Building Permit is needed before restoration work can begin. If you would like to learn more, the team at Stichting Monumentenfonds Curaçao (MFC) is ready to advise you.

The Restoration Plan: The Architectural Blueprint
A detailed architectural restoration plan is essential for your Monument Permit application. As the blueprint for preserving the monument, the plan must include at least the following drawings:

  • Working drawings of the existing situation: A clear drawing at a scale of 1:50 or 1:100 showing the monument in its current condition.
  • Working drawings of the proposed situation: The future layout, including floor plans, elevations and sections, also at a scale of 1:50 or 1:100.
  • Detail drawings, where required: Drawings recording heritage features in detail so the monument’s distinctive characteristics can be properly assessed.

Before preparing the plan, contact MFC to discuss your ideas at an early stage and agree on the drawings to be submitted. This helps your application proceed smoothly and efficiently.

Step by Step Towards the Right Permit
If you ever decide that the monument must be demolished, which is fortunately exceptional, a Demolition Permit is required. Applications for both Monument Permits and Demolition Permits are submitted through MFC. MFC assesses your plan and advises the government, after which the permits are issued by ROP/Planning & Heritage within the Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning. If a Building Permit is also required, apply directly to ROP/Permits.
MFC restoration financing is available only for projects for which a Monument Permit has been issued. It is therefore advisable to follow MFC’s step-by-step process carefully.

In Summary
This technical restoration plan and the accompanying process guide explain the steps required to bring your monument back to life. By following the rules carefully and working with MFC, you help preserve Curaçao’s rich cultural heritage, an investment in our shared history for today and the future.
